Rose’s Ramblings


Hi Readers. Welcome to Friday’s issue of Cabot News...our last issue for two weeks. I leave here Tuesday, July 26 with a busload of people for a trip to Quebec City. It’s going to be great...most of the people on the bus are friends and acquaintances so I’m sure it’ll be a fun time. I’ll be back again on August 3 but will take the rest of the week off from publishing...just to give us all a break, eh? <smile> The next time you hear from me will be will be Tuesday, August 9. I’ll have my laptop with me, of course...wouldn’t leave home without it...and will do my best to keep up my correspondence current. I have no paid ads scheduled for this period and I’ll do my best to catch up with your co-op ads as soon as possible when I get back. So, until I come into your email box again, have a great two weeks.

Another Perspective

Here’s a rant from fellow publisher, Jan Tallent-Dandridge, that bears repeating. I have had the same experience and I fully understand her frustration.


 
Hey, Where Did You Go?

This is an open letter to all affiliate program managers
as well as a warning to affiliates for these programs.

After wasting two - ten hour work days editing hundreds
of pages, I feel a need to share this message.

I went to ONE domain of pages to remove a program that
I was informed was no longer active. Kudos to the
affiliate program manager who bothered to let me know.

While cleaning up this set of pages I noticed a link
that was no longer "live". Upon checking, I found that
over HALF of the programs I had been wasting space to
promote were: "unknown", "program has been discontinued",
"owner of program has been shut down due to policy
infraction", etc. and NONE of the other so-called
companies had bothered to let me, or I would bet,
any of their other affiliates know!

Yes, it is MY responsibility to maintain and check
my own web pages and I accept that. But as I had
been recruited or even practically begged to JOIN
most of these programs, it seems that the owner of
the offer could send out a form letter or something
announcing the end of the offer or his/her business.

Should I assume that they have so many thousands of
affiliates they do not have the time, let alone the
consideration, to do this?

Once I started checking all links I also removed
any that had not had responses for the past year.
So, in a way, this one considerate ex-program
manager did me more than that one favor. But,
I ask again, why would only one bother and up
to 20 NOT?

My main concern, other than wasting good page space,
is wondering what my visitors thought of me and my
business sense when they checked out one, two, ten
or whatever DEAD links. Worse, two of the programs
were still in force but had disbanded their affiliate
programs ... thus getting the traffic we sent them
with our getting no compensation for sending them
the traffic! I have no way of knowing how many sales
I may have helped them make and to me that is just
plain out and out theft and a slap in the face.

My suggestion to affiliate program managers is to
realize that we, your *sales team*, deserve to know
when an offer, program or company is no longer
available and to affiliates, I advise you to check
your links often, especially if an offer that was
doing quite well, as some of my former ones were,
suddenly slacks off or dies out.
