Rose’s Ramblings
From Springdale, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, welcome readers. Whooeee...it’s ‘hot’. We’re having both high winds and high temperatures all day...the kind of a day you don’t want a forest fire to start. Well, the little town just east of us has once again been hit. A few years ago they had to evacuate the town because of fire. Then, in February, 2003, their town was frozen in ice as the river overflowed in winter temperatures and much of it had to be rebuilt. ( http://www.cabotmall.com/badger.htm ) Today, they many of the homeowners had to evacuate again when fire came too close for comfort.
Just a reminder that Friday is Canada Day and I won’t be sending out Cabot News on that day. Our town has some celebration activities planned and we like to take part in some of them. So, it’ll be a busy day. I’m sure our fellow Canadian on the list will also be whooping it up in some form or other. So, let’s take a break and celebrate this wonderful land of ours. “O, Canada, we stand on guard for thee.” Oh yes, I’ll give you the ad code in my Thursday ramble. <smile>
Just a reminder to take advantage of our Triple Whammy ad special. This is a great deal with 3 for the price of 1.
Thanks for reading today’s issue and checking out the offers of fellow marketers. You are all so appreciated.
Cabot News is a marketing newsletter, so expect to see ads. As a fellow marketer, please give the same consideration to others as you expect for your advertising efforts. Thanks. :-)
We offer to run a 3-line ad (on the house) each week for our readers.
Ad-Code and instructions for submitting are at the bottom of Friday’s issue each week.
You can add your business url when you contribute to any of the following:

As a reader, we invite you to tell us a little bit about yourself and give a brief
description of your business for our Reader of the Week for Friday's issue each week.

We welcome general comments,
suggestions, musings, insights, etc.
Letters to the editor may be used (in whole or in part) in an issue, so
if you'd rather not be quoted, just say so in your email and we’ll

Internet Tip
Windows Tutorial Part 3
PC maintenance should be
preventive.
With computers, it's vital. Sure, you don't have to do it, but if
you're at all interested in keeping a nicely functioning machine,
you'll do it.
Things like sorting the bits and bytes on your hard drive into an
organized fashion are handled through the de-fragmentation skills
of the Disk Defragmenter. You'll read somewhere, "Did you defrag
your drive?" Excuse me? Do I want to do that? I'm leary about
defragging anything.
But of course now you know we're talking about un cluttering the
clutter your hard disk turns into after it's used for more than a
few days.
Scandisk is another maintenance utility that comes with Windows.
It fixes problems on your hard disk before they get out of hand.
Your defragger won't finish its job if it encounters a disk error
that Scandisk hasn't fixed.
Run Scandisk as a part of your maintenance routine, and then
defragment. And let the Scandisk doctor fix the problem
automatically. He knows what he's doing without your help. If you
want to know more in-depth stuff about hard disks and why they
work, consult a PhD in discology.
Using Scandisk and Disk Defragmenter on a weekly basis will not
improve your computers performance dramatically, but it will
dramatically decrease the likelihood of a disk crash or loss of
other important stuff.
The Windows Registry is totally unlike anything you've ever seen,
and is off limits to the timid.
The Registry is a central database that contains all the info on
settings, colors, properties, and more for your PC. It also holds
the settings for the programs and applications, as well as
hardware installed on your PC.
Entire volumes have been dedicated to this area, including my own
Windows Registry for Newbies e-book. If you're interested,
consult The Newbie Club web site for this ebook:
http://newbieclub.com/rfncopy/
Click the link, and you'll be
whisked to the page.
Plug and Play is just a phrase and doesn't always work as simply
as stated.
The goal is to get Windows to automatically configure itself when
you install some new piece of hardware. You plug in a new
scanner, start Windows, and it discovers the new equipment,
configures itself accordingly, and lets you start scanning. If
only it were actually that simple.
Plug and Play isn't all peaches and cream, but it goes a long way
in making installations easier.
If you never hook up new hardware, then you won't be bothered by
this. The easiest way to install new hardware is get the neighbor
kid over for cookies and milk in payment for installing your new
hard drive. OK, not really. But if you're totally challenged by
the idea of digging into the guts of your PC, then find someone
who will take this task in stride.
Find other great tips like this at the Newbie Club.

Building Customer Confidence
Sure, the e-tools available for an online merchant are great. You
have up to the minute product selection on your web pages, and
auto-responders that can follow up requests. You have your own
online mall, immediate payment methods to prevent that "cooling
off" period, secure sites for financial transactions, and all
sorts of e-tools at your disposal. But what is wrong? You're
not being overwhelmed with sales, and barely making expenses.
Stop for a moment. Why are potential customers not placing an
order. Assuming you have a decent product and prices, why are
they not buying.
Possibly they have questions that are not being answered, and
would like to talk with a live human being. The brick and mortar
store has the edge over the e-store, when faced with a customer
that needs personal contact to feel comfortable.
If someone has reached this point, usually all they need is a
little assurance before placing their order. And here is the
funny part - they may not even want to talk with someone, but may
just want to be sure there is someone to contact if there is a
problem.
If you don't list proper contact information for your virtual
business, you may be losing customers. Your name and e-mail
address will go a long way. Even better, give them a physical
address and a telephone number they can call. You may wish to
have an "800" number, but you will get a lot of "tire kickers".
Even if you don't give a f.r.e.e number, just the fact that there is
a number listed goes a long way in allaying their fears.
Let your potential customers know that if they have questions,
they can email you their phone number, and you will call them.
Many times they won't, as all they really wanted to know is that
they are dealing with a real person.
They say a picture is worth a thousand words - consider putting
your picture on your web site. This gives instant identification
to your name and goes a long way in building customer confidence.
E-commerce is here to stay, but the mortality rate of "wannabes"
will be high. Those that remember the "Personal Touch" and build
customer confidence, will be among the survivors.
Did you know that subscribers to Bob Osgoodby's F.r.e.e Ezine the
"Tip of the Day" get a F.r.e.e Ad for their Business at his Web
Site? Great Business and Computer Tips - Monday. Wednesday. And
Friday. Instructions on how to place an ad are in the Newsletter.

Have a laugh. LOL
A man was wheeling himself
frantically down the hall of the
hospital in his wheelchair, just before his operation.
A nurse stopped him and asked, "What's the matter?"
He said, "I heard the nurse say, 'It's a very simple operation,
don't worry. I'm sure it will be all right.'"
"She was just trying to comfort you. What's so frightening about
that?"
"She wasn't talking to me. She was talking to the doctor!"
