I’m behind like the cow’s tail...seems like it’s getting to be a habit, eh? More people have regular old
modems than have cable modems,
although the cable market grows daily. The next few tips explain
the modulate-demodulating world of the modem in simple terms
anyone can understand. And whether your modem is internal or
external, it works the same.
# Modem is actually an acronym for "Modulate-Demodulate."
See the MODEM in there? Now you know. A modem changes
digital signals (ones and zeros) into sound waves, and back to
digital again.
# A modem's main purpose is to connect one computer to
another computer using a telephone line. They're just a little
better than two cans on a string, but use the same basic
principles, with of course a more souped up ability.
# Your e-mail travels at the speed of your modem between
your computer and your mail server. "Your mail server" actually
refers to the computer that's hosting your e-mail account.
# Your computer has to dial another computer's phone number
before you can do anything on the Net. If you get a busy
signal, this means all the modems in the modem pool are being
used.
# Internet service providers have to install rooms full of
modems. These are called modem pools, or modem banks. It's
an expensive undertaking. You might want to ask a potential
provider what their modem to user ratio is. The lower the
better, which means you'll get less busy signals.
# Cable modems are fantastic because they free up your
phone, are always on, and are super fast. It's the newest way
to connect. Cable modems use the same cable that a cable
TV set uses. Yep, that's right. No extra cables, no adapters,
nothing. Just the cable and a cable modem.

Default Window Size
Hi Bob, I enjoy your ezine.
One tip I haven't seen is the answer to this; My Internet
Explorer default has somehow changed so that all new windows
that open are reduced. How can I change it so that they all
automatically open full size?

Neil - this is a question I do get a lot, so I thought that
instead of just answering it, I'd make it today's tip.
There are three options available when opening a window.
Minimized, which simply places it on your task bar - Normal,
which opens it in a reduced size - Maximized, which opens up
full size.
To select the option you wish, right click on the Icon on your
desktop that you wish to open full size, and select
"properties". Select the "Shortcut" Tab and find the "Run" box.
Click on the arrow to the right and you will find the three
choices available. To have your screen open full size, select
"Maximized".
Personally, I prefer them to open in a reduced size. You can
enlarge the size by placing your mouse on the corner(s) and
dragging it open to the size that you wish. I like this as I use
two screens and sometimes I want the window on one and sometimes
on the other. You cannot drag a maximized window from one
screen to the other, be can if it is reduced.
