Rose’s Ramblings

Hi Readers. Here’s Friday’s issue of Cabot News coming to you on Saturday. I had a busy day yesterday and a surprise birthday to attend last night. Regulars will remember me telling you of my sister-in-law who almost didn’t make it after what was supposed to be a routine appendectomy. Well, family and friends surprised her with a 45^th birthday celebration last night. It was an emotional, but happy time considering how different it could have been.

On the other hand, the ending is not always as happy...our thoughts go out to the family and friends of young Internet marketer/guru, Corey Rudl who died so tragically o Thursday. How sad! Although I have not been involved with his products, I received his newsletter for a while. Strange...how these Internet acquaintances, like “ships that pass in the night” can leave behind them such an emotional wake. I’ve felt a sense of sadness and loss ever since I heard of Corey’s death. Such is the power of the Internet world in which we spend so much of our time.

The Importance of Business Planning

Developing plans for your business is quite a serious
undertaking. Many small business owners either lack the
skill to plan the future of their business or they are too
busy with the battles and the fires they are working on
today, to even begin thinking about planning.  For a while
during the technology boom, the corporate plan was founded
on the principle " Build it and they will come" and " the
old business models just don't work anymore". In fact if
you uttered the words business case or business plan during
that time frame, you were labelled a dinosaur and shuffled
off to some backwater if you were lucky. Many business
planners were fired.

After the technology boom, as a society we once again
have adopted the business plan philosophy.  When you run
any business you should adopt a business plan and
implementation plans or goals that you need to achieve.
If you take the time to also develop a solid business
case with well thought out financial data then you will
also be able to seek loans from the bank or other lenders.
After that you have done that you can then put the plan
into action and begin to test your assumptions.

A business plan contains a description of the product
or service that the business is selling in order to
make money.  The Plan also outlines how the product
will be marketed and sold to customers and defines who
those customers are. The plan will include some financial
data including a sales forecast and revenue projections
based on the items you will be selling.

You will also need to estimate all of your expenses.  You
need to be brutally honest about this and not under
estimate the expenses for running the business. Nor should
you over estimate the revenue projections.  Many people
do this and many businesses fail because of it.  You can
use some online tools to test your financial assumptions
and to generate worst case, likely case and best-case
scenarios. These tools also indicate to you what variables
in terms of costs and revenue will have the greatest impact
on the business should they rise and fall over time.

The best thing you can do when starting your new business
is to make sure that you get the products, marketing,
delivery and support right.  You need remain focused on the
business plan and goals and use these as your monthly
target to give your business the best chance at success.

One night at McChord Air Force Base, I was dispatched to check out the security fence where an alarm had gone off. The fence was at the end of the base runway.

When I got to the scene, I found a raccoon was the culprit, so I ran around and flapped my arms to scare the animal away.

Suddenly an air-traffic controller came over the public-address system and announced loudly,
